The Ohio Senate unanimously passed a bill to prohibit certain sex offenders from being on school, preschool, or daycare premises.
Current Ohio law only prohibits convicted sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school.
The bill includes exceptions for legitimate purposes, such as a parent picking up a child or voting at a school polling place.
The Ohio Senate passed a bill that would bar most sex offenders from entering schools, preschools and daycares – a restriction lawmakers said should have existed long ago.
Senate Bill 422 passed 33-0 on June 10.
Current Ohio law prohibits convicted sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school, but it does not stop them from entering school buildings or attending school‑related events.
“Senate Bill 422 is common sense change aimed at protecting children from sex offenders,” said Sen. Andrew Brenner, R-Delaware, one of the sponsors of the bill. He said he was surprised the prohibition wasn’t already in state law.
