  • In a statement issued to PEOPLE on July 25, the Owasso Police Department confirmed that his alleged crime — “Lewd Molestation of a Minor” — had been turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review

The Owasso Police Department (OPD) has issued a statement about the ongoing investigation into the death of Sara Gilson.

PEOPLE previously confirmed that Gilson, 43, was shot by her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, who then fatally shot himself. Police discovered both individuals dead with gunshot wounds in Gilson’s home in Owasso, Okla., at around 11:15 p.m. local time on July 23. A child living at the home made the 911 call that alerted authorities.

This article is more about the accusations against the ex than the slaying of a so-called influencer (read: internet poster begging for attention). And awfully vague accusations at that. The “inappropriate touching” – not reported by the purported victim – could have been celebratory hugs or high fives, for all we know.

When society has waged war on people, these outcomes should not surprise us. Being labeled like this, true or not, is the social kiss of death, which for most people, is worse than physical death, therefore a not insignificant fraction will act on that and take rash “end of the world” actions.

So now we have more death, more pain, and nothing gained. Did society rid itself of a monster, or did it create it?
