CA: Assembly Approves AB 1568, potentially blocking many registrants from petitioning for registry removal

The California Assembly has voted in support of Assembly Bill (AB) 1568 on May 26.  If that bill becomes law, many registrants who are otherwise eligible to petition for removal from the registry could be blocked from doing so.

AB 1568 will next be considered by the California Senate in what could be a three-step process.  First, the bill will be considered by the Senate Public Committee no later than July 2.  If that committee passes the bill, the bill will be sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration no later than August 14.  If and only if that committee approves the bill, all members of the Senate will vote on the bill no later than August 31.

“It is disappointing that the Assembly passed AB 1568,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci.  “We must double our efforts to block the bill during its consideration in the Senate.”

Dates for Senate committee meetings will be posted on the ACSOL website as they become available.  At that time, ACSOL will identify methods members of the registrant community can use to stop the bill in the Senate.
