Janice’s Journal: The Power of Knowledge and Networking

There is great power in both knowledge and networking.  The power of knowledge includes acknowledging that we are facing challenges as well as identifying methods to successfully overcome those challenges.  The power of networking includes meeting others who face similar challenges and discussing how it feels to be on the registry or a family member of a person required to register.

Both knowledge and networking will be available in an abundant supply during this year’s conference on October 2 and October 3.  The first in-person conference that ACSOL has conducted in several years.

During the conference, I am looking forward to learning and sharing.  I am also looking forward to the excitement of shaking hands, sharing stories and listening.

We will learn about employment challenges and opportunities for those required to register.  We will also learn about how to travel safely both within the U.S. and overseas.  Further, we will learn about how to succeed while on parole or probation.  Finally, we will learn about pending lawsuits, including the petition for review before the U.S. Supreme Court and the ongoing challenge to SORNA regulations. 

During the conference, we will also learn if and when registrants are eligible to petition for removal from the CA registry.  In addition, we will learn about the petitioning process which can take up to six months.

And, of course, we will learn about Emotional Support Group meetings offered by ACSOL that meet often and help registrants and families share their feelings when they are ready to do so.  The graduates of these groups have learned how to cope and even overcome the obstacles they once faced.
