The WAR Admin Team AND our Class Action Core Team are proud to announce that we will begin work this week on two law suits to be filed at the federal level this fall. That’s right – two of them!

The first is on behalf of registered sex offenders and the second on behalf of families and friends of registered sex offenders.

The challenges will be against SORNA and the impact to the registrant families, which has been verified and documented by researchers. Also, the public impact will be defined in an upcoming survey being developed with the assistance of Professor Crysanthi Leon of the University of Delaware.

Even though these laws were mandated at the Congressional level then enacted to varying degrees by the state legislatures, we will be asking the court to rule on “the law” thus removing the manner in which legislators have purported to keep children safe – punitive punishment for registrants and families. It is time to take the issue out of the state legislators hands and campaigns and place it firmly in front of the supreme courts.

The concept of filing based on the collateral damage experienced by those who seek to provide positive support at re-entry and thereafter will gather steam and provide a more assertive approach than is being used today.

There was an article today, in the OC Register, about how CDCR is now going to start individualize the evaluations of RCs to see if they can/should live near schools/parks etc.

I cant find the article now to link it. Maybe someone else who saw it can.

It was said this evening on The O’Reilly Factor, that there are 1.2 million law enforcement officers; the sex offender registry nears 800,000 or three quarters that number. This further illustrates how overly broad it is, to indiscriminately include people once convicted of a “sex offense” to register; forever. The sex offender registry is counter intuitive to the rehabilitation, employ-ability, or the stability that suitable housing provides. Everyone deserves the support and encouragement to reform and rehabilitate themselves. The registry is evil itself.
If there was an additional registry for one more category of crimes, drunk drivers, drug dealers or gang members, cumulatively; it would out number law enforcement personnel.

I know it’s random and probably a silly question, but I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere…

The CA Supreme Court made their ruling, and cities/counties — as well as CDCR — are rescinding or changing their statutes. But all these articles I read refer to the 6000 supervised RCs and how this affects them. What of those who’s AREN’T supervised? 0.o
I have been off parole for five years. My conviction was in 2001, from when I was 17. I’m currently shopping for a house with my family, and have NO idea where I’m even allowed to go — or whether I even have restrictions in many cities. I know West Covina’s current rule applies to “all 290 registrants, regardless of whether on probation or parole.” But is that even allowed? I can find NO article stating anything but all the other RCs — only parolees. :-/

Not a sex offense but definitely child related and drives home a point. 9 year old boy stabbed and killed. This wasn’t some random stranger, but a childhood friend. This didn’t happen in a public space but in the victim’s home. This murderer wasn’t on any kind of registry. He is not the sick old man hiding in the bushes. He is an 18 year old young adult (but still a psychopath nonetheless). Here’s the kicker, considering mitigating factors, he might again see the light of day following his punishment. However, he will never have the restrictions that all registrants face. He would be free to live anywhere and venture any place he pleases.

The Wisconsin DOC has been adamantly against residency restrictions of any type for years. They’ve been going head-to-head with politicians both local and statewide recently and this is the outcome.
