FL: Homeless Sex Offenders Must Move Again

Ever since the Julia Tuttle Causeway became an encampment for sex offenders more than a decade ago, officials have been trying to shoo the group away from the rest of civilization. Thanks to stringent requirements mandating that child predators live 2,500 feet from schools, parks, and daycare centers, the offenders have struggled to find legal housing, leaving many effectively homeless. For years, the roving offenders have been shuffled from one place to another, angering unlucky neighbors and nearby business owners. Full Article

NY: Anthony Weiner complained about sex offenders in district before scandal

[nypost.com – 5/27/19] Here’s another thing that gets a rise out of Anthony Weiner: other perverts. Weiner’s office repeatedly called the NYPD’s Sex Offender Monitoring Unit to gripe about pervs too close to his digs and other places, a source told The Post. Weiner even once called the unit himself to grumble, according to the…

Santa Clarita City Council Repeals Residency Restrictions

The Santa Clarita City Council voted unanimously to repeal the city’s residency restrictions during its May 14 meeting. Because the issue was placed on the consent calendar, the vote took place without discussion or debate. A lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on February 25, 2019, challenging the city’s residency restrictions which prohibited registrants from living within 2,000 feet from schools, parks, public libraries and child care centers. The effect of this restriction was to place off limits virtually all of the city, including hotels, on either a…

Kat’s Blog: Residency Restriction Proposal in Hawaii

Last August I wrote a blog piece on the Women Against Registry website regarding homeless registrants living in city parks and on the beaches of Oahu. At that time, the island seemed to be doing just fine without any presence or residency restrictions. Hawaii is one of 20 states that doesn’t have restrictions. Back then, Hawaii’s public defender, Jack Tonaki made this comment “the island is so small, residency restrictions would make it impossible for registrants to find housing.” As far as I can tell, the island hasn’t grown in…

CA: San Diego Federal Judge Denies City’s Motion to Dismiss Challenge to Residency Restrictions

[ACSOL] A federal judge today denied a Motion to Dismiss filed by the City of San Diego that, if granted, would have ended a challenge to the city’s residency restrictions. In its decision, the Court found that the city’s residency restrictions were more restrictive than restrictions adopted by the county of San Diego which were overturned by the California Supreme Court in March 2015. Specifically, the Court found that “the Ordinance that Plaintiffs’ challenge is even more restrictive than the regulation in Taylor and thus likely unconstitutional under the Due…

OK: Some law enforcement worry new, stricter law will discourage sex offenders from registering

A new law that further tightens restrictions on where sex offenders can live has some law enforcement agencies concerned it will discourage people from registering as offenders. The law, which went into effect on Nov. 1, added home daycares to the list of locations sex offenders cannot live near. Prior to that, state law already prohibited offenders from living near child-friendly areas, ordering them to live 2,000 feet from public and private schools, churches, playgrounds, parks or daycare centers. The law did not apply to home daycares, of which Oklahoma…

CA: Think sex offenders can’t live next to parks and schools? That’s not always the case

It was the man’s address. ____ ____, who previously served prison time for lewd acts against a child under 14, was registered as living directly across the street from Colony Park and one block from the Fine Arts Academy. Atascadero police records indicate that the most recent allegations against ____ are not related to his…
