More Cities Repealing Bans Against Sex Offenders in Parks

Fullerton, Huntington Beach and Yorba Linda this week join the list of Orange County cities pulling back from local bans on sex offenders in parks in the wake of a state Supreme Court ruling that said they didn’t comply with state laws. Full Article

It is great news that three (3) cities in Orange County are considering in the same week the repeal of their sex offender ordinances! They join other cities including Anaheim in this effort. And they join the cities of Laguna Hills and Lake Forest who have already made the right choice — by repealing their ordinances. All of these cities could have spared themselves of this hard work by NOT following the Pied Piper, that is, the Orange County District Attorney, who assured them that their ordinances were constitutional and instead listening to California RSOL who warned them that they were not.

Pressured to pass SOMETHING, or be painted by the OCDAs office as looking like they loved RSOs, The Irvine City council passed their version of the ordinance, which was less then the one-size-fits-all of the county ordinance. But as one councilmember said, even so, such an ordinance was a solution looking for a problem.

I think it was inevitable these cities developed park bans or something equally bad, given the hysteria over sex crimes embedded in our modern culture and the recent legislative history, since the nineties, and the lack of any successful challenge to the Megan:s laws. Extreme legislation is against the Constitutions, but seems like the evils will have to run their course before our rights are restored.
