The Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Resource Center has published a policy brief on Sex Offense Registration and Notification (SORN) Laws. Download the policy brief
From the Executive Summary:
The modern sex offense registry was borne out of the belief that a public registry listing people who had been convicted of a sex offense would make communities safer. That premise was wrong. We now have thirty years of data concluding that public registries do not work as intended—in fact, there is evidence that public registries actually increase registrant recidivism. Furthermore, there is no definitive evidence that these laws deter non-registrants from sexually offending. At the same time, sex offense registration and notification (SORN) laws contribute to the stigmatization of registrants, which make securing employment and housing more challenging, and disrupt or preclude the maintenance of strong social ties. Registrants’ families also experience significant hardships. SORN laws should be abandoned, and resources should instead be invested in evidence-based interventions to address sexual violence that are currently starved for resources.
Do you know anyone that actually thinks that the registry does anything productive? I don’t.
Is there anyone that genuinely knows you, that thinks you should be on the Registry? I know one person that thinks this about me… my Step-Karen. She still doesn’t think it does anything productive, but is certain I should be on it!
Do you know anyone that thinks you should be on the registry because having you on the registry does something productive? I don’t.
Even the people that are certain that having me on the registry does nothing productive, will still do everything they “Need to” to keep me on it. Because…
* There may be value in having someone else, with the same conviction on it!
* If we let “People like you” get off, someone else may be able to get off as well!
* It doesn’t need to do anything productive, it just needs to…(This is my Step-Karen)
* I’m not voting for _____ because they want to keep you on the registry, I’m voting for them because ______!” (Thanks Dad!)
People don’t actually care if the Pogrom does anything productive or not. The people that know it serves no productive value to have you on this, will just presume it is productive for everybody else… and you’re just an acceptable loss in that process.
Or, like my Step-Karen, it’s all revenge.
Or, like my Dad, doesn’t matter who is on it, or why, or what it does or doesn’t do… he’s getting his tax break… and whatever happens, happens! I’m just a small price to pay to get what he wants!
This Policy Brief can change that?
Praise God!!!!!!! An actual school of law that is teaching their students the facts and publicizing them online!! What a wonderful thing that is!! There is hope for us yet!!
The paper is very persuasive – if you have the time, it is a good read.
