A bill intended to keep convicted sex offenders away from kids would throw the Connecticut’s sex offender registry into “chaos,” according to the state’s Department of Correction.
Included in Senate Bill 1087 is a provision that would prohibit registered sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school or a child day care center, but according to Eric Ellison, deputy director for parole and community services at the Correction Department, that’s not a feasible, or even desirable, goal. From the article…
Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Norwich, testified in favor of the bill, saying that if something can be done to keep residents safe, it is the legislature’s responsibility to do so.
“The majority of Connecticut residents believe that sexual violence is a problem in their community,” she said.
“And if that’s belief they have,” Osten continued, “then by golly, true or not, that’s the one I’m going to appeal to (to get more votes)! Who am I to muddy the waters with studies and research that counters the instincts of the fine, decent folk of Connecticut? It’s not my job to educate people with facts. Nonsense. ‘Round these parts, we legislate with our gut!”
Wow, she is a moron and doesn’t seem to care that she comes off as such
And the public pays for her stupidity. The Bully Pulpit actualized; bought and paid for.
Is this evolution or devolution?
Dear C
I have been trying to find the following statement made by Senator Osten in the article “CT: Bill to Keep Sex Offenders Away From Schools Could Cause ‘Chaos,’ Critics Say” that you posted in the COMMENT SECTION of the CA RSOL but have been unable to find it in the article or any other articles pertaining to this Norwich controversy. The only thing that comes to mind is that it was taken out because someone was concerned about the negative reaction it wouldget about admitting that research and studies do exist and that the public wasn’t informed.
If you have the link to the article with this statement, can you please e-mail it to me. As a Connecticut resident, l would like to respond to this article to Senator Osten and our Connecticutt representatives that these people are human beings and the majority of them are people who made a mistake and are given a punitive life sentence instead of a second chance.
Thank you.
