Ekiti State Government in the western zone of Nigeria Monday announced new measures aimed at curbing sexual violence, especially child defilement and rape in the state.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Wale Fapounda at a press conference to announce the new measures disclosed that persons currently standing trial for offence of child defilement and those whom the Director of Public Prosecution had issued a ‘case to answer’ legal advice for the same offense will henceforth undergo compulsory psychiatry test.
Other measures according to the Commissioner include pasting of photographs of convicted sex offenders in prominent public spaces in their local government headquarters and uploading the sex offenders’ photographs on the website of the Ministry of Justice.
Such sex offenders, according to the Justice Commissioner would also have their photographs shown on the state owned Television station and their names announced on state radio, in an apparent move to name and shame them.
Fapounda said the state came up with these new drastic measures when previous measures, which included aggressive prosecution of sex offenders, opening of sex offenders register and disqualification from prerogative of mercy appeared not sufficient enough to curb the scourge.
These scumbags should be commended for at least having the courage to say what their real intent is and not hide behind “public safety”, “protecting children”, and the other lies.
No offense to anyone who loves Nigeria but it doesn’t strike me as the most progressive of civilizations. The U.S. should be proud to be at that level and worse. Maybe they should try public floggings.
We do the same, it is called the registry. Photos plastered in a public place for all to see.
I think Americans seeing this happening “from afar” will have a much clearer picture of what a human rights violation this has been the whole time. It’s difficult for them to see it from close up – in their own “Land of the Free” (or bloated imprisonments in our own communities). They don’t even want to comprehend the Human Rights Watch report on these audacious and quite daring legislations. We have all been betrayed by this government overeach. The same way this country exploits other countries via foreign policy. It’s only so long before this gets fully exposed. I see it sooner than expected.
Same day as this article, it is announced – 2 headlines down on the home page – that former world heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson will be among the top boxing dignitaries expected at the Abuja Stadium for the African heavyweight championship fight holding in August 2019.
Make that Tier 3 and currently non-compliant Nevada registrant Mike Tyson. Will he be named and shamed?
Nigeria is fighting a civil war. These wars always increase sexual and other violence against women and children. There is little anyone can do about that, but stop the conflict. They apparently have a restorative justice program where the offender can avoid these shaming methods if they become involved in healing of the victim. Also the former offenders can petition off this type of shame list. How easy is that to do here in tbe great USA? Under the circumstances, I would say they seem to be slightly more reasonable than US.
What a f$%%$#$ money scam all this has become,
Nevada
“Convicted sex offenders and persons convicted of a crime against a child are required to renew their driver’s license or identification card every year. Applicants must be in compliance with offender registration requirements before a license or ID will be issued or renewed.
See NRS 483.283 and NRS Chapter 179D.”
