ALBANY, N.Y. — A bill that would create a statewide registry of violent felony offenders has passed the Senate.
“Brittany’s Law” would require certain convicted felons to register with the state’s Department of Criminal Justice Service after being released from prison and have their names added to a statewide violent felony offender registry, similar to the sex offender registry. Full Article
I don’t condone the registry under ANY circumstances. However, this will be one group of registrants who will most definitely NOT be harassed or vilified. Imagine a vigilante knocking on the door of a gangbanger who maimed three other bangers trying to kick him out of the neighborhood. It will most probably not end well…
Great! Another registry to monitor and create mass hysteria. In the beginning, it will be people like John Edward Brown who will be on the list, but just give it some time, and they will add ridiculous offenses to the list. The person who throws a water balloon at someone, the person who got mad at his wife for talking during TV, so he threw the remote control at her, the kids in school who got into a fight over a girl…..just wait. The list will be so long that nobody will be able to monitor it or distinguish between the real violent person, or the ones mentioned above. Bravo! Keep going. Pretty soon, the whole country will be on some sort of list. Ridiculous.
I’ll bet if this catches on (registries for people convicted of crimes other than 290 type offenses) these registries won’t destroy the lives of the people listed on them. I’ll bet it won’t make it next to impossible to find stable housing, a job or get them banned from most of society.
This is what I’m pretty sure is going to happen. Rival gang bangers will be using this new registry (if it comes into being) to track and locate rival gang bangers and there will be more murders, assaults and a general increase of in the activities these people are involved in. This will be made much easier for them courtesy of the state. The proponents of this new registry need to think this through, but I think it’s safe to assume they wont.
…and if we start registering everyone who gets parking tickets and make them all public, we’ll have all the dangerous criminals posted online in the name of public safety!
Not to mention the cost involved in California it is $64 million per year. This money in California would be better spent in our education system.
Why do people post here but not at the actual location of the article?
I think that when an article comes out in the media, all people who are Registered in the U.S. should respond to it. People need to see an overwhelming response that Registries are simply not acceptable and that they will not be tolerated.
